Twitter’s New Competition – Zuckerberg Launches Threads in the UK

Within 48 hours of going live, Threads, the newest and most highly anticipated alternative to Twitter, had already claimed 70 million sign ups in the USA and UK. If you’re a business with a strong social media presence, you may want to keep a close eye…

What is Threads?

Threads is in no uncertain terms, a direct competitor for Elon Musk’s Twitter. Many say the app looks identical to Twitter; the news feed, reposting icons, even the heart shaped icon to “like” a post. Threads is owned by Mark Zuckerberg’s company, Meta, the same company behind the most popular existing social media platforms. Zuckerberg is also utilising famous names and exploiting the celebrity draw. Shakira, Gordon Ramsay, Oprah, Sarah Jessica Parker and Chloe Kardashian have all been widely publicised for joining Threads within hours of it going live.

Why has Threads been launched?

Zuckerberg has seen the gap in the market for a Twitter alternative as users have been left increasingly frustrated by the changes made by new owner Elon Musk. Threads has been promising a “saner, kinder place” than Twitter.

Initial thoughts on Threads?

Some initial complaints include a lack of familiar and popular features found on other platforms such as hashtags, private messaging and muting accounts. But the new app being in such infancy, no doubt some of these features will be incorporated at a later date. There also isn’t any desktop functionality at the present time.

The future of Threads?

With over 3 billion users on Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, Meta certainly has the users to potentially tempt to Threads, as well as the big advertisers.

But Zuckerberg and Meta has a history of clashing with marketers over transparency and accuracy of its data, as well as its handling of data, and privacy issues. Whether these concerns will be transferred over to Threads, and act as a sticking-point for advertisers we will wait to see.

Is your business keen to set up a Threads account?

It will be interesting to watch how quickly Threads spreads, and at what point we may all feel the tipping point whereby more of our prospective customers are using it, and the pressure to join is unavoidable
