After more than a year of discussion, new legislation has been backed in congress that would give the Federal Government new powers to ban or restrict Chinese-owned video app TikTok, as well as any other foreign technology that poses a security risk.
Senator John Thune made reference to the potential lies from China regarding the spy balloon, as well as the recent pandemic to explain continued distrust surrounding China’s intentions and potential abuse of its technologies within the US.
Who could be affected…
Other countries whose technology would be covered by the Act include Russia, Iran, North Korea, Cuba and Venezuela. The new Act would apply to hardware, software and mobile apps, as well as future AI and e-commerce products.
National security advisor Jake Sullivan said, “This bill presents a systematic framework for addressing technology-based threats to the security and safety of Americans.”

The owner of TikTok has denied any association between its app and surveillance, but it cannot be ignored that Chinese Law does require any company to comply with all requests made from Chinese intelligence services. The fact that the app remains a very real vehicle for access to Americans’ data, could be enough to see the ban gain pace.
