So what’s the issue with short-term holiday lets?
The number of holiday lets has increased by an average of 40% in England in the past three years. Alarmingly short-term lets in Cornwall rose by 661% in the five years leading up to 2021. In 2022, the BBC even reported that people were having to move into Airbnb rentals in their hometowns, as they were being priced out of the rental market due to the dominant holiday let market.
The issue has been worsened by the pandemic, with people opting to holiday within the UK rather than travelling abroad. While city workers continue to benefit from flexible working parameters, relocating to work from UK holiday hotspots instead.
What does home-sharing market leader Airbnb have to say?
Airbnb, although open to the new scheme, warns that there needs to be serious thought and consideration given to the families that rely on short-term letting of their property to help afford the increasing living costs.
