The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport wants all homes in the UK to have gigabit-capable internet by 2030. Two new regulations announced on January 6th look to make this possible.
The 2 newly updated regulations
Regulation 1
New regulation passed by the UK Government – all new homes built in England must now be fitted with infrastructure and connections required to achieve gigabit internet connectivity.
The new laws hope to remove the costly burden for later upgrades.
If the new homes are in rural or remote areas, the fastest available connection must be installed up to a cost cap of £2000 for each home.
Regulation 2
Previously, homeowners in apartment buildings needed to gain permission from the landowner or landlord to allow a broadband provider to install upgrades. Broadband providers estimated that around 40% of these requests are ignored, leaving tenants unable to upgrade their internet services.
Now, landlords and landowners have 35 days to respond after a request is made, or broadband providers can gain access-rights via court.
“Nothing should stop people from seizing the benefits of better broadband, whether it is an unresponsive landlord or a property developer’s failure to act,” said Julia Lopez, Digital Infrastructure Minister.
This is a giant leap forward, offering assurance of fast broadband to an estimated 480,000 people living in multi-dwelling units in the UK.
The 2 new updated regulations are going to bring better and faster connections to homes across the UK.
