Pope Francis’ Administration Red Faced as Vatican Museum Staff begin Lawsuit

49 employees of the Vatican Museum have begun legal proceeding against the Pope’s administration over working conditions after years of having their requests for improvement ignored.

The petition is the first formal legal step under Vatican law.

Recap on The Vatican

The Vatican is a sovereign country, and although situated within Rome, it is completely independent from Italy. It is the smallest state in the world by both population and area.

The Vatican Museum is one of the most visited museums, with some of the most famous paintings and sculptures in the world, including the Sistine Chapel.

What the petition says…

The unprecedented move blasts “labour conditions undermining each worker’s dignity and health” – an embarrassing petition aimed at the Vatican City State.

The lawyer representing the museum workers elaborated that this includes extra work hours at lower pay rates, and insufficient health and safety provisions. Under Vatican law, workers unions are forbidden.

The group of long standing workers are fighting to instigate “a general rethinking of Vatican labour rules” their lawyer said.
