Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has launched a new phone app that enables messaging without the need for WiFi or a network signal.
The new app called Bitchat operates using the phones Bluetooth.
Why make this app?
Jack Dorsey is a vocal supporter of increased user rights and private communication since leaving Twitter. The new app therefore does not require a phone number, email address or account to function. There is no tracking or data collection which will appeal to many.
Without the need for WiFi or network signal, this app allows messaging even when networks are over stretched – during a music festival or sporting event for example. The app would also be valuable during controversial events like protests, when network access may be restricted or blocked.
Technical limitations of Bluetooth
You may be sceptical of the use of Bluetooth, after all, it is well known to have a short functioning range at just 100 metres. However, the app navigates this pitfall by relaying messages through other phone users in the vicinity. This creates a peer-to-peer network, allowing the messaging range to be dramatically increased.
Fancy trying Bitchat?
A beta test version of the app has been available on Apple’s TestFlight, an app testing service. Within 3 days the testing phase was already full with 10,000 downloads. The extraordinary interest in the app will undoubtedly mean that a wider roll-out is imminent.
