October is Menopause Awareness Month
A new menopause initiative has been launched to better educate employers on how to support women through menopause. The initiative called ‘Making Menopause Work’ has been launched by The Menopause society to offer more advice and guidance with healthcare plans, as well as practical steps to improve working conditions for those in menopause.
What’s the damage?
1 in 4 people consider quitting their job due to menopause symptoms, with 1 in 10 actually doing so. The US estimates that $1.8bn of working time was lost due to women missing work because of symptoms.
Menopause in the UK Workplace – How are we doing?
The UK should be proud that in a recent survey, effective workplace menopause programmes were becoming more commonplace, but there’s still work to be done. This year Britain’s Equality and Human Rights Commission voiced that employers have a legal obligation to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ for those experiencing menopause symptoms.
Guiding this new initiative and picking up the baton for UK menopause workplace support is Menopause Friendly. Menopause Friendly offers an accredited programme for employers, setting clear standards for workplace support, as well as free and fast online resources such as checklists to gauge your current support level, and ways to improve. 100 UK employers have already completed the programme – it’s hoped that many more will sign up with this most recent publicity push, with October being marked as Menopause Awareness Month.
