Meta, the owners of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp plan to build the world’s longest ever underwater cable to bring internet connectivity from the US to India, South Africa and Brazil.
The project is called ‘Waterworth’ and will involve a record breaking 31,000 miles of underwater cabling.
What’s the Plan…
The project will strengthen the company’s control over its services and support its tech development globally, particularly its AI ambitions.
Meta notes the significant growth and investment in digital infrastructure in India for example. Waterworth will further support and accelerate the develop the country’s digital aspirations.
Meta has an incentive, with 10 percent of fixed internet traffic and 22 percent of mobile traffic globally running through their services.
Worth Knowing…
More than 95% of the world’s internet traffic is transferred via undersea cables. Recently there have been concerns about the vulnerability of undersea cabling, and its susceptibility to targeted attacks from other nations. Meta plans to lay its cabling 7,000 metres deep to avoid damage.
Waterworth will be a million dollar, multi-year investment project.
With this project, Meta will compete directly with other tech giants. Google has around 33 undersea cable routes, while Amazon and Microsoft are also investing in this sector.
