With a 50% rise in cyber-attacks in the last year, national security officials are warning even the smallest of businesses to prioritise having a contingency plan in place.
“Your IT infrastructure crippled tomorrow, and all your screens go blank” becomes a real possibility the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) warns.
What do we know about the attacks?
Officials advise that the biggest threats are coming from China, Russia, Iran and North Korea, labelled as “highly sophisticated” as well as “capable and irresponsible.”
The 50% rise in attacks is coming mostly from ransomware by criminals seeking money, targeting society’s weakness as our dependence on technology skyrockets.
The NCSC dealt with 429 cyber incidents in the year to September and nearly half were classed as of national significance – a 50% increase upon previous years.
Bussinesses big & small must take heed…
You may remember the recent attacks on large retailers such as Marks & Spencer and Co-op. The government has written to hundreds of Britain’s largest companies to urge them to make cyber-resilience a priority. However, security minister Dan Jarvis warns “Cybercrime is a serious threat to the security of our economy, businesses and people’s livelihoods,” and the NCSC are providing support to businesses of all sizes.
The message is, do not make yourself an easy target, take cyber-attacks and new AI cyber capabilities seriously. Officials issue “a call to arms”, from the smallest businesses to the largest employers, to draw up contingency plans.
