Low-paid workers will now be entitled to 80% of their earnings from the first day that they are sick in new changes to Statutory Sick Pay.
Previous Sick Pay Rules
Previously, an employee will only qualify for sick pay after being ill for 3 consecutive days and earn an average of £123 a week.
Concerns for Small Businesses
The British Chambers of Commerce warned that allowing sick pay from the first day of illness will undoubtedly lead to increased staff absence that small workforces could struggle to handle.
Jane Gratton, deputy director of public policy at the BCC has concerns that difficulties in finding shift cover at short notice would only be intensified by the plans – leading to disruption for customers.
Employers have already had to absorb an increase in both minimum wage and employers’ National Insurance. Many businesses say that this additional cost will only further damage growth and lead to more unemployment.
