No doubt you will have seen the two capital letters ‘A’ and ‘I’ popping up in email subject lines a lot this year. But it’s predicted that in 2025 artificial intelligence, in the wrong hands, will be a real area of concern for businesses.
Phishing Emails of Old
In the past phishing emails have been largely distinguishable from their legitimate counterparts due to typos, formatting mistakes, grammar, misuse of English vs American English, and general translation by someone not using their native tongue.
New Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has all but eliminated these traditional telltale signs.
We’re currently seeing a 30% improved success rate in phishing emails written or rewritten by Artificial Intelligence. In the past, we ourselves have been the final line of defence, being able to filter out the scam emails by logic and instinct.
Now, ironically, businesses must turn to the power of AI to help defend against an increased level of sophistication in phishing email attacks.
The Future of Phishing
Randy Rose, Vice President at the Center for Internet Security predicts the biggest impact will be seen in Business Email Compromise, given GenAI’s ability to mimic email style. An attacker can feed examples of legitimate emails to GenAI and have it produce new emails identical in nature to mimic and fool victims. “In this sense humans remain the weakest link in the cyber security chain…they must have more weapons to defend themselves.”
How Businesses Need to Respond
Global cyber security leader Palo Alto Networks stresses that it’s critical for businesses to be “adaptable to the readily changing threat landscape.” Businesses must future-proof through secure browsers, AI Copilots (an AI assistant to complete tasks and make decisions) and AI-driven threat protection and response.
